We oppose the Event Space for the following reasons:
We believe the Event Space is the beginning of Front Beach development that will keep proliferating across the beach. Next will be Golf cart rentals, jet ski rentals, parking lots, all catering to tourism at the expense of the residents
We believe the Mayor has a desire to turn Ocean Springs into a tourist town similar to Gulf Breeze, Destin, and the likes. If you have doubts about this, listen to the Ocean Springs State of the City address where he talks about growth and tourism or quoted in the Sun Herald "We're a tourist town." FYI - the mayor hosted a delegation from Gulf Breeze in April. That's where we are headed unless we make a change
Food Trucks will have a negative impact on the beach from noise pollution (generators, music, etc.), environmental impacts (fumes, oil and gas leaks, increase in garbage, such as food wrappers and drink containers), increased traffic, and visual disruption-the Event Space and the associated infrastructure will obstruct natural views, altering the pristine visual aesthetic of Front Beach. The main main allure of this beach is its tranquility and natural environment
This property was purchased by the city for 'public use.' The photo below is the type of public use we would like to see continue on this property. We want to see the property remain as it is, a natural beachfront park. We do not want to see development on this property. We do not want to see the city spend money on this property
