The City protects certain trees on all property within city limits. Permits are required to trim or remove protected trees. These trees are part of what makes Ocean Springs great
Protected trees are magnolia, live oak and eastern red cedar; they recently removed cypress from this list, and it seems developers can get permits very easily to remove protected trees
OSMC Appendix C, Chapter 4.11 - Tree Protection and Preservation
We have seen increased instances of ancient oaks cut down
MS Power WAS spraying & trimming vegetation, violating its own policies- but their Arborist stated that they are no longer spraying within the City limits south of I-10
Plans to cut vegetation every two years
They plan to give homeowners notice before they arrive
What we want:
Reestablish the Tree Committee
Uphold the tree protection code
Monitor MS Power to ensure they follow their policies
Qualify as a Tree City USA per the Arbor Day Foundation to protect our valuable trees
